Planes, Trains, Busses, and Bikes?

If you’re coming to Chicago for one of the hundreds of events in the city this summer, we highly suggest you take public transportation. This will make it not just easier getting to the event, but getting out of the event as well. If you do drive, we recommend using one of those nifty parking apps like ParkWhiz or Spot Hero to save some coin - also, plan to park a little further from the event and grab a divvy or public transportation to get the rest of the way there. You’ll be happy you did when you’re leaving at the end of the night and 100,000 of your newest best buds are sashaying past your parking exit!

Use Protection!

The summer sun get’s hot in the city! Sunblock 50 should keep you covered for a long day of checking out art or listening to your favorite bands at Lala. And like our parents always told us, don’t forget your ears! You may even want to grab a hat! And while you’re at it . . . use plenty of lip balm. Those tender little pie holes get extra well done in the scorching sun!

It’s Not My Bag

Since these festivals don’t let you in with big bags or backpacks . . . plan ahead with a stylish little fanny pack (yes, they’re in again). This way, you’ll never lose it by setting it down; you don’t have to rely on a friend to hold it while you pee; pickpockets will find you less desirable; and most importantly, with your stuff securely attached to your body, you’ll be hands-free to more easily schlep beers without sloshing them all over yourself before the first set.

You’re Not a Camel

We may be sounding a bit like your mother, but the lady was able to keep you alive for your first 18 years! It’s super important to hydrate before, during and after the fun! Be sure you are drinking water intermittently with everything else (no, beer, wine and cocktails technically do not “hydrate”) . . . it’ll be your savior, not only for that day, but definitely the day after!

What to Wear?

Again, Summer. Chicago. Heat! Loose, light clothing should be the order of the day! Let your body breathe! Try to avoid dark colors, because as we all learned in the 4th grade, dark colors absorb the suns’ heat, while light colors, let’s say it together, “reflect the sun!” It’s like armor really.

Stay Charged

Could there be anything worse than being right in front of the stage, all ready to take what will surely be THE MOST viral Instagram story ever, and realizing your phone is out of juice!? Whhhhhy? Sure, there are charging stations available, but better yet, spend a little money and buy one of those remote chargers or power banks - and you’ll never have to worry about your virality!

Christkindlmarket
So here’s a classic . . . from top to bottom, this thing is Christmas, with a decidedly German flair. The food is pretty awesome too . . . and the warm spiced wine? Yes please! See for yourself but avoid the crowds and get there on a weekday if you can! Now through Dec 24 (6p-7p).

Zoolights (at Lincoln Park Zoo)
Who doesn’t love animals, and really nifty holiday lights? If you haven’t done it, you should - and it’s not just for kids! You’ll definitely score points with your significant other by suggesting a stroll through this twinkly utopia. Now through Jan 5.

If this isn’t already a holiday tradition, you might want to add it to the repertoire. If you love classic Holiday flicks, it’s a seriously cool way to usher in the holiday spirit and at one of Chicago’s most beloved landmarks, The Music Box Theatre. Catch a show Dec 12 - Dec 24.

Eve of the Eve
If you love the idea of a festive night out to ring in the New Year, but don’t want to be caught up in it, check out Eve of the Eve at Union Station. It takes place December 30 and has all the cool stuff of New Year’s Eve -  like, cocktails, food, live music and dancing, but without all the chaos that comes with it. Plus it’s for a good cause! After 30 plus years, the 69th annual NBA All-Star game returns to Chicago’s United Center on February 16. Heck, most of us weren’t even born yet! But it’ll be worth the wait! And if seeing fierce NBA players led by LeBron and Giannis making it rain isn’t enough for you, the halftime show will feature performances by local favorites, Chance the Rapper and Common. Yup, we’d say this weekend is going to be pretty much lit! No tickets? No problem! Check out the NBA All-Star Crossover event happening all weekend at Navy Pier, billed as “the most immersive and engaging pop culture event during NBA All-Star weekend”. So what gives? Well, you’ll see live music performances, pop-ins by a variety of NBA players past and present, celebs who dig the sport, and much more. One day and 3-day passes are available here. 

Feeling like you might need a break from all the court-side action? Well, believe it or not, there’s still plenty going on in the 312 that you might want to catch! 

If you love music, Pitchfork Mid-Winter rocks the city starting February 15 where you’ll have the chance to see some of the best indie artists and up-and-coming talent on the music scene . . . Dig theatre? Chicago Theatre Week begins on the 13th, which means . . . . you get the cheapest tix of the year to some of the most revered live stage action available. After all, Chicago theatre is legendary! And if you fancy yourself a car enthusiast, (or as they say across the pond, a petrolhead), Boom! You’re in luck, because the Chicago Auto Show is parked at McCormick Place through Feb. 17. 

So the net-net? (no pun intended, really!) Whether you’ve got tickets to the NBA All-Star game or not, it’s going to be slam dunk weekend all the way around. 

Oh, and don’t forget to give your Valentine a giant smooch! 

Music in Chicago has a thriving and storied past - it is an integral part of this city, part of its DNA, really. We’re talking beginnings in the early 20th century when migrants came from the south and influenced the scene with their rich music culture. Plus, lots of music legends come from this city - legends like Benny Goodman, Herbie Hancock, Muddy Waters, um, the band, Chicago . . . More your g-parents scene? Ok, how about Smashing Pumpkins, Wilco, Common, Fall Out Boy, Chance the Rapper, Jennifer Hudson . . . just to name a few! Besides those that were locally raised, hundreds have made the pilgrimage here to cut their teeth and earn some major cred on Chicago’s well-known stages and at our festivals, and they’ve been returning ever since. If you love music, you can’t deny that Chicago’s music culture is where it’s at!

We LOVE that any night of the week we can stumble out of work, weary from the day and catch an amazing set just about any place. And the pure abundance of genres to groove to is staggering! From rock, to indie, jazz, blues,  gospel, country, pop, house, the 312 has it all. It would take us days to tell you about each and every venue, so we’re just going to trim it back to some top reco’s! So here goes - we love fresh sets by up-and-comers at Lincoln Hall, Schuba’s, and Thalia Hall. Sometimes we jazz it up at the Green Mill, which dates back to 1907 (and the occasional celebrity sitings are a bonus here). The Metro and the Vic  bring hard core acts on the cusp, and the Riviera lights it up with a diverse stable of genres every night. And we can’t forget about the Underground, a hot dj spot and a favorite of visiting celebs. How do we cap off a night of live tunes? We go for a live blues set at Kingston Mines, natch, it’s an institution and seriously, a must experience for every visitor to the city.

We would be remiss if we didn’t make mention of Chicago’s Music Festival season, Noted by some as “the best in the world”. People flock from all corners of the world for a chance to experience Lollapalooza, long considered the Mac Daddy of music festivals around these parts. Here’s a bit of trivia. Lolla began as a single stage music showcase - a farewell to the band, Janes Addiction in 1991, but by 2005 had morphed into Lollapalooza. True! But it doesn’t end there. Pitchfork, Riot Fest, Square Roots Festival. Even the city sponsors FREE concerts like the Chicago Blues and Jazz Festivals and countless other music celebrations can be seen (and heard) throughout Chicago’s vast network of music-loving neighborhoods.

Between our indoor venues, and summer festivals, Chicago maintains a diversely robust music scene year-round. No wonder we love it so much. It’s in our veins. From ACME with love, indeed.

We get it . . . we’re in the midst of a pandemic, it’s winter, and you’ve got a bit of cabin fever - So of course it begs the questions . . .  “Where can I safely go, and what the heck can I do there?” The answers, ACME in Chicago, and PLENTY!
Sure, lots of Chicago’s “insides” are closed, but there’s still so much of this city to see and do! So get down with your down jacket and follow along because you’re not going to want to miss these! DINING

Outdoor dining in Chicago has never been more adventurous! Think of your favorite spot, then imagine it outdoors, in winter, likely with heat lamps or a tent! (that’s the adventure part). Tell us that’s not instagram worthy? Chicago has also gone the extra step to close down some of its most famous streets, to allow area restaurants to serve diners under tents in the great outdoors. Tell us that’s not instagram worthy? But if you’re still not feeling that brave, Most of Chicago’s favorite local haunts are open for delivery and curbside pick-up. Huddling up in your boffo room at ACME with a delicious meal is certainly nothing to scoff at. 

SEASONAL STUFF

ZooLights at Lincoln Park Zoo is always a wonder to behold, and this year is no different, except, no huge crowds!
And if lights are your bag, you’ll truly dig the Holiday lights on Michigan Avenue. Just as gorgeous as ever, a stroll down the avenue will surely get you into a HO - HO - Holiday mood!

If you’ve got some shopping to do for those on your Nice List, plenty of Chicago’s most unique boutiques are open. Many of the stores on the mag mile are open too, with limited capacity, but that’s good news, because, no crowds!

Who doesn’t love the sound of cold steel on ice? If you do, them Maggie Daly Skating Ribbon in Millennium Park is the place to be. Wind and bob through the park with the city skyline as your backdrop. Yup, it’s pretty fun, and dramatic all at the same time!

The Art of Bansky, Unauthorized Private Collection, opens in Chicago July 1. Boasting over 80 original works, the “unauthorized” exhibit is being billed as the largest Bansky exhibit ever assembled. Banksy exhibits are a very rare phenomenon because the artist himself is elusive, anonymous, and not much for exhibiting his works anywhere but the streets. This Banksy exhibit, deemed unauthorized, is comprised from private collections . . . which makes this experience all the more covert! Even the location is being kept under wraps . . . for now! If you love Banksy, and a little bit of mystery, this could be the highlight of your summer!

Hanging with the art theme for another second, the Immersive van Gogh Exhibit is on fire, and thrilling art lovers on the daily. This is not your Father’s art Exhibit, this is all digital, monstrous, and as the title implies . . . immersive. Tickets are hard to come by, but they’re out there . . . Immerse yourself in some really cool digital masterpieces. Seriously, Gogh!

You'd have to have been living under a rock if you missed the news that LOLLAPALOOZA is back in 2021 and jam-packed with artists you’re gonna want to see! Post Malone, Foo Fighters, Tyler The Creator, Megan Thee Stallion, SuicideBoys, need we go on? Tickets are on sale and if you can’t get them . . . make friends with someone that has ‘em!

Okay, so how about some Pop Culture on Crack?! . . . If you love all things Super Heroes get yourself over to the Museum of Science and Industry (MSI) for Marvel: Universe of Super Heroes Exhibit. This high-octane exhibit takes you deep into the Marvel galaxy with interactive exhibits that go in-depth about the origins of some of your “superest” of heroes. Plus, there are original film costumes, props, comics, that might actually give you that Spidey feeling! This actually may be the closest you ever get to a Super hero . . . or their stuff, anyway!

What is Chicago without festival season? Luckily this year . . . we don’t have to find out . . . because the Chicago Music/Art/Food Festivals are BACK. Soon we’ll be chowing down on street food, swaying to the vibe of live bands, checkin’ out some art, soaking in the summer rays of the 312 . . . all while likely, drinking a 312! The holidays are the perfect time to take in this one-of-a-kind art installation.  Art on the Mart, will be featuring the Joffrey Ballet’s The Nutcracker, where images/video from the actual stage production are projected on the Mart. Why? Because it’s cool and different and it takes place at one of the city’s most iconic theatres, The Music Box Theatre. This year’s double feature is White Christmas, and It’s a Wonderful Life. And indeed it is!

Looking for an art fair that’s a smidge more high brow? Then step next door into the Old Town Art Fair where juried artists line the neighborhood streets of Old Town and transport you someplace really special. There’s food and drink here too, and big crowds, but the overall aura is a touch more subdued - and there’s lots of shade.  

JUNE 17-19
Randolph Street is the place real foodies go when hunger strikes and the Taste of Randolph is your prime opportunity to sample the plethora of good tastes that dot Randolph Street, and be a foodie for a day!. Live bands turn it up a notch and make for a really good time day or night, and a Chicago summer mainstay. 

JUNE 18/19 
Show your pride at The Northalsted PrideFest featuring live music by headline artists and local favorites, 3 stages, food and drink, 100+ arts/crafts vendors, DJ’s and dancing, drag shows, pet parade, sponsored presence, games, giveaways and more. It’s a massive celebration of the country’s first recognized LGBTQ communities. Anything goes at this proud celebration.

As a cap to PrideFest, the Chicago Pride Parade steps off the curb in Lakeview East to celebrate Pride in all its glorious forms. It’s a day of revelry and celebration and one not to be missed!

Chicago is no stranger to funny. We find it 24/7/365 in the big windy. But every now and again, something so different pops up, that we gotta shout it from the rooftops! Have you ever heard of the massive hit series, Drunk History? Drunk Shakespeare is like that only, live, and Shakespearian! The New York Times called it “boozing rowdiness and debauchery" . . . and Slate said it was “the best thing to happen to theatre” . . . no argument here! It’s  happening right now at The Lion Theatre. Funny.

Chicago Gourmet is the foodie event of the year around these parts. Featuring world renown and Michelin starred chefs, this annual spectacle of taste is the place to be for anyone wanting to explore deliciousness on a whole new level. Events sell out fast, so get your tickets now!

Contrary to what you might think, the music scene in Chicago doesn’t just heat up during summer when you can’t walk a few blocks without tripping into an awesome band playing a local festival. Yes, Chicago’s music festivals are awesome, but the Chicago music scene is on fire twelve months a year. From rock and roll to jazz, blues, pop, hip hop, indie, electronic, country, heavy metal, punk, alt rock, folk, orchestral, opera . . . you name it, Chicago’s music scene hits on every note (pun intended). Let’s break it down and see what’s in store for Chicago’s Music scene in 2024 . . .

01. BIG NAMES - MASSIVE VENUES

For decades, Chicago has been attracting some of the biggest musical acts and tours to its renowned venues like The United Center, Soldier Field, the Chicago Theatre and, wait for it, Wrigley Field! (We’ll get back to that in a second). This year alone, Chicago will be hosting some of the biggest artists and tours - of all genres, from way back and  today.

If you’re of the boomer persuasion, or just dig a classic groove, throw it back with Heart with Cheap Trick. Check out Chicago with Earth, Wind and Fire, or rock it hard with Metallica. Of course all of today’s top talent will also grace our stages from  Bad Bunny to Olivia Rodrigo, Tim McGraw and Usher, Justin Timberlake, and Cigarettes After Sex. By the way, if you’re a fan of friendship bracelets, Taylor Swift and her Eras Tour were here for 3 nights last June!  If you're a fan, hope you caught it!

Whether you’re into rock, indie, jazz, pop, rap, classical, blues, you name it . . . Chicago is the place to be for live music!  We’ve got the full list of major concerts in Chicago HERE if you want to take a bite out of the whole music enchilada!

BACK TO WRIGLEY

Not a Cubs fan? No problem. If you haven’t rocked Wrigley for a concert, all due respect, you haven’t really been to a concert – There’s something almost poetic about it – It’s intimate – like you’re seeing your favorite artist with 41,000 of your closest friends. And if you didn’t have any friends before, you will when you leave a concert at Wrigley – you’ve got to experience it to really get it.

Plus, Wrigleyville is ground zero for food and drink with hundreds of hang out joints up and down Clark St, Sheffield, Addison to chow down and imbibe before and after the concert, so your night won’t end when you hear the final “G’NIGHT CHICAGO. So, who’s up to bat this summer at Wrigley? Check out who’s coming this summer below!

02. SOMETIMES, SIZE DOESN’T MATTER . . .

Chicago is also home to epic concert experiences at sick venues ranging in capacity from a few hundred like Schuba’s, The Empty Bottle, the HideOut, to up to 5,000, like Lincoln Hall, The Vic, Thalia Hall, the Aragon, The Riviera, to name a few. One of the newest and coolest on the scene – Salt Shed, it's an indoor/outdoor venue that has set Chicago’s live music scene on fire!

There are a whole lot more of course, featuring a multitude of genres and artists from Pop, rock, Indie, Alt, House, and Rap. Tucked into eclectic Chicago neighborhoods, these smaller, more intimate venues showcase emerging talent (local and otherwise), providing up-and-coming performers a platform to gain exposure, and for fans . . . a dope, up-close experience with artists on the verge of greatness. Let’s go to the highlight reel!

• Schuba’s:  It wasn’t too many years ago that a young, and relatively unknown artist named Billie Eilish (yes that Billie Eilish) played Schuba’s – Originally an old Schlitz Brewery Pub in the Lakeview neighborhood, Schuba’s has been an epically famous joint for decades known for showcasing new talent. Even Bob Dylan was rumored to grace the stage of Schuba’s in his early days.
   
• The Salt Shed: Home is the former Morton Salt warehouse (Yup, the gal with the umbrella, considered “vintage” today). Salt Shed is the newest and hottest venue on the Chicago music scene. Adjacent to the Chicago River, this indoor/outdoor venue will be hosting Wilco and  Benson Boone. It’s considered a “multipurpose creative hub, with music as it’s heartbeat” and we call it spectacular!
   
• The Riviera: With a 100-year history in Chicago, the Riviera, located in the historic Uptown neighborhood, has seen just about everything. SuperTramp was its first concert nearly 50 years ago. Multi-Grammy winner Jon Batiste graced the stage just a few short weeks ago. We should mention Wilco, Adele, and other biggies played here as well while they were getting their feet wet as artists . . .

Chicago is known for being a ripe testing ground for talent, so let’s name drop - Chance the Rapper, John Mayer, Mumford & Sons, Metallica, Alabama Shakes, Fiona Apple, Black Crowes . . . Of course, the list goes on and on, but you get the point! The other nice thing about these smaller music houses? Accessibility. They are simple to walk, Uber, or even drive to – many with parking lots of their own or convenient street parking (if you get there early enough). And if you’re a lover of specific genres . . . Yup we’ve got those too!

03 WHO’S GOT THE BLUES

If you’re a true lover of blues, then you owe it to yourself to catch some blues in Chicago! Many claim Chicago is the original home of the blues, (and while we’d like to claim that too), according to National Geographic, the blues didn’t “start” in Chicago. Following the great migration of African Americans seeking a better life up north, the blues found footing in Chicago and the magic of the blues took flight. Now the Blues brothers, yup. All Chicago. But we digress. For any true lover of Blues, you’ll find Chicago’s rich and diverse blues scene intoxicating – brought to life by the multitude of Blues clubs spread across the city! Here are just a few!

• Kingston Mines; Established in 1968 , Kingston Mines is like a gritty velvet jewel box. Blues greats have been performing here for nearly 60 years – We’re talking biggies like Koko Taylor, Sugar Blue, Joanna Connor and Magic Slim, plus a whole lot more! Find yourself with nothing to do in the wee hours? They’re open ‘til 4a on Friday’s and 5a on Saturday’s . . .  Their motto? “Hear Blues – Drink Booze – Talk Loud-You’re Among Friends.”  (Lincoln Park)
   
• Buddy Guy’s Legends: Every self-respecting Blues fan has got to catch this near South side scene at least once. Owned by the powerful and renowned Blues guy and Grammy winner, Buddy Guy, the club Is as much of a legend around these parts as he is!
   
• Blue Chicago: Right around the corner (sort of) from ACME in River North, this high energy blues outlet has hosted some of the bluest names in the business!

04 ALL THAT JAZZ

Much like the blues, jazz made its debut in Chicago when southern musicians migrated north in the early years of the 20^th century looking for prosperity and a better life. And jazz has had a strong heartbeat in the city ever since. One of Chicago’s most legendary jazz clubs, The Green Mill is believed to be the oldest continuously running jazz club in the entire country. 

• The Green Mill: is one of Chicago’s most legendary jazz clubs. Rich in history, and back in the day when mobsters ruled, a favorite haunt for notorious mobster Al Capone. In addition to the cool smooth jazz, we’re guessing he rather liked the secret tunnels he could use for escape routes! Following Prohibition, The Green Mill attracted jazz biggies like Louis Armstrong, Billie Holiday, and Al Jolson to its stage - - - We said it was legendary, right? Even today, some of the biggest names in Jazz can be seen here seven nights a week. . . until 4am. Take a nap before you go!
   
• Andy’s: In the heart of River North originally opened in the 1950’s, it became home to members of the newspaper industry in Chicago. In 1977, Andy’s reinvented itself into a jazz club and the rest as they say, is history. With 3 shows a night you can get all that jazz at Andy’s pretty much on the regular!
   
• Chicago Jazz Festival: Ok, so it’s not a jazz “club” but it’s worth it to commit one weekend every summer to get here for the greatest jazz – ever. Why? That’s easy. Number one, It’s FREE. And you just can’t beat free. Number two, It takes place in Millennial Park with the dramatic Chicago skyline as a backdrop. And three, the Jazz Festival is literally the Who’s Who of jazz, (past and present), counting Miles Davis, Ella Fitzgerald, Dizzy Gillespie, Ramsey Lewis and countless other Jazz greats who have graced the festival stage.

05 ARE YOU A LITTLE BIT COUNTRY?

Yes, Chicago peeps dig the country scene – and if you want proof, Zach Bryan just lit up the United Center for 3 nights in March. Billboard top country artists rolling into the big windy this season include Tim McGraw at the United Center, Kenny Chesney at Soldier Field, George Strait with Chris Stapleton and Little Big town at Soldier Field, Tyler Childers, Luke Bryan, Jelly Roll, and Kacey Musgraves . . . Mic drop much? Plus, you can catch country just about every night of the week around these parts! Check out the Hideout, Bub City in River North, and this summer, Red River Dicks - it’s getting’ all the love and it hasn’t even opened yet! Of course, you can join a down home Country Crawl in Wrigleyville and spend a day hitting all the local joints with a bunch of your newest BFF’s!

06 THE WHOLE SHEBANG

Sometimes a good time isn’t defined by the music genre. Sometimes you just want a nighttime hang that pours a decent drink, a place where the crowd is just sort of winging it, and where live musicians leave it all out on the stage . . . whether it’s punk, indie, rock, country – it doesn’t matter. And to care is to miss the point! 

• House of Blues: Even though it's in the name, The House of Blues isn't just about the blues. It's really more of an eclectic mix of genres. House of Blues features a main stage, a dinner and concert experience, and a smaller private room for live tunes. They also host a seasonal Gospel Brunch on Sunday's, and really, who can argue with some good tunes and good food after a long weekend of concert going . . . 
   
• The Vic:  With a history packed with music legends like David Bowie, Coldplay, The Black Keys, The Cure, Phish, Flaming Lips, to Comedy geniuses like Jerry Seinfeld, Ellen DeGeneres, the late Richard Lewis, and Amy Schumer . . . The Vic is literally the place to see it all and it's a quick "el" to Lakeview.
   
• Cobra Lounge: Yes, it's as cool as it sounds! Located next to Union Park, it's a super easy (albeit crowded) drop in before or after Riot Fest! The Cobra Lounge showcases underground and emerging talent.
   
• The Metro; Known for attracting multi-genre bands, the Metro has hosted them all, from indie pop to mainstream Rock, the Metro is known for bringing in little known talent on the cusp of greatness.

07  KEEPING IN HARMONY

We’d be totally remiss if we overlooked the powerful, the evocative, the melodic experience that is the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Have you been? Two words. It’s cool. The CSO was founded in 1891 and is always hailed as one of the greatest orchestras in the world. Maybe you’re not a fan of the Symphony – or maybe you just don’t know! Imagine one hundred musicians playing on a stage at one time (no wonder the conductor carries a stick) something amazing is bound to happen! We think a night at the Symphony should be on every bucket list. Some say it is transcending! The Spring season is in full swing through June and returns in late September with a full slate.

08  TRAINS, PLANES, AND AUTOMOBILES

Of course, getting here can be half the fun! Gig-tripping to Chicago is so easy . . . Chicago is central to tons of cities and towns that might not book some of these bigger shows, or even some of these smaller indie shows – Whether you’re a suburbanite or out-of-towner, Chicago is pretty much smack-dab dead center and super easy to get here.

Chicago is a no brainer road trip to musical nirvana.  . . . especially if you’re already in the Midwest (and parts of Canada). Heck, even if you’re in LA . . . take a few weeks off and make it a nostalgic ride all the way up the historic Route 66 (which dead ends right her on the Mag Mile)! Route 66 is one of those epic, infamous road trips - a giant swath of Americana, that everybody talks about taking but actually, should just DO! And from the East Coast? twelve hours (just about) and done!

If you’re not into road-tripping and prefer one and done, between O’Hare and Midway Airports there are thousands or (hundreds?) of flights that arrive and depart daily, and if you plan, you can mostly score a decent fare! Once you’re here, it’s a super easy breezy orange or blue line train ride into the city.  What’s even better is 99% of these venues are accessible via public trans - which pretty much translates to – once you’re here it can be fairly cheap to get around! If you want to spend a little dough-re-mi - Uber and Lyft are everywhere!

Say this out loud “We’re driving to Chicago for the weekend”. Boring, snoozy, I gotta walk away from you! Now try, “We’re Road tripping to Chicago for the weekend” – And suddenly I’m intrigued . . . maybe enough to even ask if there’s room for me and my gear!

Immediately you get that this is so much more than rest stops and gas stations ... Fact is, if you do it right, (and have the right company), it can be just as much fun as the destination itself! But, like many things, it entails some intricate thought – strategic planning . . . Take a gander below for some of our best Road Trip tips and ideas for turning it up a notch and getting from point A to point B. 

                                                   1. TAKE THE LUGGAGE, LEAVE THE BAGGAGE 
If you’re trippin’ to Chicago, there’s really no reason to over-pack. We’re a fairly casual people! But of course, it all depends on what your plans are. If you’re coming to club, then sure, you’ll need a different outfit for every night – But one pair of party heels are plenty. Plus, day clothes. If you’re hitting the festival scene, figure one outfit per festival – it can get hot and crowded and nobody wants to walk around the second day with a beer splashed shirt! If you’re just in to hang, a sundress or ensemble will be just right for day or night. We’d throw in a light sweater or jacket that’s universal to everything – because Chicago . . . and a chill can set in when you’re not looking! 

                                                                    
                                                                          2.  SNACKAGES
Keep it cool on the road with an awesome cooler to keep your food and drink chill! Igloo is a classic of course and comes in an abundance of sizes and colors. Craft yourself some sandwiches, maybe an awesome board, a pasta salad? Fruit and veggie bags – you name it. And don’t forget, the cooler works both ways! Pack up your left-over deep dish after the weekend to chow down when you get home!  It’s always nice to take home the taste of Chicago! Wanna keep your beverage stops to a minimum? One word Stanley. Hot or cold . .. Done. 

                                                             3.  BE ROAD TRIP PLAYLIST READY!

Terrestrial radio is great for your commute – but driving in and out of signal areas can be maddening! And if you’re into Sirius, well that’s cool, but the mood can alter with each song! Let loose, take command, and get into the groove, become one with the road with a customized Road trip Playlist! Follow your usual jam or customize a playlist that feels like FREEDOM! You know, the kind of tunes that drive along with you - propel you to your destination, and leave you feeling revved up for what’s ahead – after all, the minute you buckle up, you’re on vacation! Suggestions? Sure! Here’s some of our top choices!

                                                                    4. MAKE ROOM FOR FIDO!

Paris is the city of lights, Chicago is the city of dogs – (we tried to get that changed officially, but too many allergy sufferers on the City Council). Jokes aside, many like to share the road trip experience with their favorite companions – But as most dog lovers know, there are some rules of the road to keep your beloved happy and healthy on the trip!
1.    Hydration is key. Be sure to bring bottled water and a collapsible bowl for your pet. Many vets say changing a dog’s                   drinking water can cause disruptions in the digestive system.
2.    Nom Nom Nom: Take plenty of treats and dog food along for the ride – You never know if you might get delayed OR                 decide to extend your trip. Being prepared is key for your dog’s wellness on the road!
3.    Stretch: Just like humans, dogs need to get out and stretch, feel the wind in their hair . . and relieve themselves. Make             sure to keep this in mind – Even if you’re not ready . . . they just might be! 
4.    Better Safe . . . While some dogs are off-leash pros, it’s never a good idea to take that concept out on the road. Being               unfamiliar with the territory, unknown distractions . . . best to keep even the best trained doggo’s securely on leash for pit           stops.
5.    Some dogs love nothing more than to stick their head out the window and feel the breeze – and we all love to see it!                 Safety tip? Goggles. Truly . . . anything can fly off the road and hit precious in the eye! Plus, it’ll be an IG winner as part of         your trip posts!

                                                              5. CONSTRUCTION DISFUNCTION
For all the great things summer is, it’s also the Super Bowl of road construction in just about every highway and byway you see. And there’s nothing worse than making great time getting to your destination, only to have that time sucked up by road construction! Sure, you can reroute, (we recommend the Waze APP for the source that best gets you around the heavy equipment), but remember, everybody else will be doing the same thing so traffic may still present itself as an inconvenience . . . 
What’s another work around? Plan to arrive here during “off peak” hours. Yes, there is such a thing - sort of! If you’re coming in for the weekend, try to make it in a day early - Thursday late morning or early afternoon are good alternatives to arriving on a Friday afternoon when the bulk of locals and Trippers arrive. Plus, you get a jump start on the weekend! But if you must wait until Friday . . . again - the immediate hours before and after lunch are your sweet spot!

Some other considerations? Find a point outside the city where the CTA L trains or Metra have stops . . . If you plan it right, you can find parking nearby for the weekend and take the train in! That’ll also save you  a lot of dough – re – me on parking in the city! 

                                                                  6. NEED A LITTLE JUICE?
If your ride is electric or hybrid you’ll be happy to know that Chicago is PLUGGED IN and CHARGED!  Check out Grid.com for the closest charging stations – There are over 2,800 spots in and around the city to get the juice . . . including Superchargers! And if you’re all petrol? We recommend gassing up once you’re outside the city limits for your return home – You’ll save yourself some green! 

                                                                          7.  BOOK IT!
People here love to EAT, and Chicago is a city bursting with amazing restaurants from Michelin star establishments to downright delicious dives! But no matter where you go, reservations are always recommended. If you don’t do it before you hit the road, this is a great enroute project for your co-pilot.

Make your reservations the minute you know you’re coming to town because some places will book months in advance! Of course, that doesn’t mean you’re totally out of luck. The good news is, with patio season in full swing, it’s a lot easier to accommodate more people!  We’ve taken the liberty to share some of the most recent “BEST OF” lists below to help your decision-making process . . .

Fall is fast approaching and it’s our favorite time of year - for FASHION! According to some fashion experts,  feathers, fur and fluff are all the rage, and so are Boho and leopard print . ..  so it seems you’ve got a pretty good range to find your own style! Really, is there a better wardrobe time of year than fall? We don’t think so - With the leaves turning color, and a gentle, cooler breeze ushering in shorter days, it’s the perfect time of year to mix fabrics and textures to create some fire layered looks.It’s all about being comfortably cool! 

We’ve done some of the ground work for you with our reco’s on shops around the city to get you outfitted for this awesome autumnal season of fun. With a few exceptions, this list is mostly comprised of locally owned shops, because supporting local businesses is important! In fact, ACME is an independently owned local business too! - So we get it. Check out some of our faves! 

1. Like a breath of fresh (fall) air, Penelope’s offers daywear, outerwear and even accessories for women and men. And since it’s a boutique, you’ll be sporting one-of-a-kind styles around town. It’s at 1913 W Division, Wicker Park.
2. Alice & Wonder is a first-rate boutique in the Lakeview neighborhood with a tagline that reads Pretty Fun Things, and we couldn’t agree more! Ranging from apparel to accessories to home, their looks are fresh and unique! The Southport corridor is stockpiled with independently owned small shops and an awesome place to spend an afternoon! 3542 N Southport. Lakeview neighborhood.
3. Featuring styles for women and men, Madewell just happens to be the mecca for denim. They even feature Madewell Atelier, a one-on-one tailoring experience so you get the exact fit you want. And yes, we want! Two nearby locations: 932 N Rush St in the Gold Coast and in Fulton Market at 855 W Randolph. Bonus, both locations are smack dab in the middle of some crazy mad bars and restaurants in the city! Stop for lunch, stop for a cocktail. Stop for a lunchtime cocktail. We don’t judge! 
4. Nordstrom Rack, while not an independent, is definitely worth a peek! Located just down the street, it’s a little easier on the wallet! Take note; one must be decisive when shopping at Nordstrom Rack because inventory shifts quite often, so if you want it - get it - because you probably won’t see it 2 hours later! 101 E Chicago.
5. Check out Una Mae’s for kicky separates for men and women. Think tops/bottoms, sweaters, scarves, plus home and apothecary items if you want to pick up some extras! They’re in Wicker Park at 1528 N Milwaukee!

Of course, fall also requires a perfect new home for your feet - A place to nestle those dogs while you hit the trendiest restaurants, gaze at a masterpiece at the Art Institute, or traverse the city taking in the wonders that are Chicago. Yes, we’re talking about boots! Those versatile fashion must-haves that complete just about any look you create - from denims to dresses, skirts to shorts - the boot is a girls best fashion friend. Give your wardrobe a kick and check out some of our favorite boot haunts in the 312!

1. Don’t walk, RUN to Free People for some of the hottest looks in boots this fall. Free People is known for their bohemian fashion and their boots. And their clothing selections are wide and incredibly on point! Plus with a few locations . . . super easy to get to!  You can find them on the Mag Mile at 835 Michigan Avenue, and in Fulton Market at 1101 West Randolph.
2. It’s no secret to most shoppers that Nordstrom has ruled the shoe department for decades. With an ultra wide selection and their legendary sales, Nordstrom is always worth a drop in - (and it’s just around the corner). 3. A Lincoln Park institution, Lori’s Shoes is a longstanding local favorite because we all know when you go to Loris for one pair . . . you usually walk out with two or three! It's what we do - A boot-shopping trip to Lori’s is like the official kick-off to fall! And btw, there’s lots of other cute places on Armitage too - Buy boots, stay for lunch, shop some more! 824 W Armitage.
4. When western boots are all the rage, one must find themselves at Alkala’s in the West Loop. Imagine just about every color combination under the sun, then consider the mind-blowing combo’s you’ can't even picture. You’ll find them at Alkala’s! Men’s, women’s, kiddo’s . . . they’re all there waiting for a new home! 1733 W Chicago Ave. 
5. City Soles has been outfitting the stylish feet of Chicagoans since 1991. From combat boots to sneakers, they’ve got it all. Besides, can you really argue with a shop that uses the tagline, If you’re going to kick ass, you need kick ass shoes? We didn't think so. 1710 N Damen in Wicker Park.

The fact is, we could go on and on . . . because there are so many shopping options in Chicago, it would make your head spin. Hopefully this gives you a head start - While you're out there, keep your eyes open, because around every corner in every neighborhood, you’re going to bump into a real find!  Maybe we'll see you out there - or better yet, here at ACME.

Now through Nov 3, what’s coined as Chicago’s largest Fall festival will be Poppin’! Franky, we think we should celebrate our significant other’s every day . . . but since there’s a special day already carved out on the calendar, and let’s face it, where the brunt of expectations lie, we’ll play along! There’s a load of fun and creative things to do in Chicago for your Valentine’s Day, but we’re going to skip the expected restaurant and spa recommendations and give you some Valentine’s ideas and intel that will make your Valentine think twice about you (but in a GOOD way). 1) Skip the Michelin star scene and make your Valentine’s day more deliciously interactive with a cooking class at the Chopping Block. 8) Valentine’s Day means Fireworks! Get yourself a comfy blanket, some had warmers and a spot on the lakefront for Navy Pier's Valentine’s Day Fireworks - or get yourself a few seats on the Centennial Wheel - Fireworks are known to inspire a few oohs and ahhs! 

9) Experts say that romance can spring from shared laughter. Maybe it's all the raging endorphins that happen with a really hard laugh from your gut! If you've got a funny valentine, they might enjoy a night with Taylor Tomlinson at the Chicago Theatre - Well, and you of course.

If you’ve never been to a concert at Wrigley Field, trust us when we say, it deserves a spot on your Bucket List! Why? For dozens of reasons. But here’s our top 5.

1 Location
Wrigley is smack dab in the middle of a neighborhood - not a gigantic parking lot in the middle of the sticks. You can go early, enjoy the outdoor bars and restaurants -  and chill with other concert goers. Or stop by after the concert for a detailed play by play!  Of course, there are a lot of places to choose from - but here are some of our faves as a start! 

     1. For a genuine Wrigleyville experience, try Murphy's Bleachers or Sluggers! Classic Wrigley!

     2. For the hands down, best burger in town, Small Cheval is fire.

     3. If you're a BBQ buff, get the smoke at SmokeDaddy, Wrigleville 

     4. Gallagher Way boasts Budweiser Brickhouse Tavern, It's a touch more upscale - but fun! 

2. Intimate
As outdoor venues go, Wrigley Field is intimate. There are no real “nosebleeds” like you see at a bunch of other venues. It’s green, it’s lush . . . it’s the “friendly confines”, and it exudes that spirit even on a concert nights. We can almost guarantee, you'll likely hook up with a few new peeps on TikTok or IG after a night arm-to-arm with them at Wrigley. It's just what happens here! 

3. Easy Peasy
Wrigley is so easy to get to! From ACME, jump on the red line at Grand venue (a block away), and you’re there in 20. From near north suburbs, grab a train, and you’re there. For many north side neighborhoods, it’s a quick walk or bike ride. Busses will transport you as well -  Wrigley is easy.

4. All the Vibes
When you walk into Wrigley, you can feel the history - the warmth, the true vibe that is this hometown favorite, and one of the last few originals still standing. From the peeps at the ticket gates, to the concessions , and the ushers . . . they all want you to feel welcome, have a good time - and it shows! One look at the ivied wall, or the scoreboard, and you’re hooked. History matters . . . even at a concert! 

5. The Experts
Even the experts love it. Rolling Stone Magazine named Wrigley Field the top outdoor concert stadium or ballpark venue in the US! Plus . . . 1) Grant Park Music Festival.   Now - August 16

Up your sophistication level with some classical music at the Grant Park Music Festival now through Aug. 16. Celebrating  90 years, this event is a beloved tradition in the heart of downtown Chicago. The festival features the Grant Park Orchestra and a selection of renowned conductors and musicians. It’s music to our ears. And it’s free. 

Light up your experience with a picnic in the park and grab some dim-sum to go at MingHin Cuisine, or bite into some            hearty sandwiches from old school diner, Eleven City Diner.

2) Chicago Food Truck Fest.    Every Friday - Oct 3

Who doesn’t love a little culinary magic on wheels? Find the goods at Daley Plaza every Friday this summer. And it’s not just one truck! Some of the trucks you’ll find are Soul & Smoke, El Azteca, Whadda Jerk, and Cajun Connoisseur. The trucks change weekly! The Chicago Food Truck Fest is rolling now. Don’t walk, run! It’s the ultimate culinary adventure on wheels and a great way to start the weekend.

3) Millennium Park Music Series.    Now - Aug 7

Head downtown to the reknowned Pritzker Pavillion at Millennium Park every Monday and Thursday evening to enjoy an extensive collection of genres from established to emerging artists. Click the link for the schedule. We highly recommend this event to guests - it’s authentically Chicago . . . and it’s FREE! Grab a bit from Millenium Hall at the park (or get it to go), or get something to go from Chicago favorite, Godess & the Grocer - right around the corner from ACME. 

4)  Chicago Pride Parade     June 29

Following up the celebrations of Chicago Pride Fest, show your Pride as the Chicago Pride Parade steps off on June 29th in Boystown. As one of the largest Pride celebrations in the US, it's become a long beloved Chicago tradition. Come out and show the love - Stand together for all the fun and pageantry -  As the Beatles famously sang, All you need is love . . .

5)  Millennium Park Summer Film Series      July 1 - Aug 26

While not technically a “festival”. It certainly is an event you need to know about! The Millennium Park Summer Film Series is a local favorite. Why? Because you’re watching movies at the stunning Pritzker Pavilion in a beautiful park in the middle of the city, on a Tuesday! Dope! Some of the featured films this summer are The Sandlot, Love and Basketball, Wicked, and Pride and Prejudice. 

Grab a blanket, and take a picnic with some Italian eats from Eataly (3 doors down from ACME), or make it more of a classic movie experience with a Tub of popcorn nirvana from the world famous Garrett Popcorn (It’s on your way). The Chicago Mix? Yes, please!

6) Windy City Smoke Out  July 10/11/12/13

It’s nickname is Chicago’s County Music Festival. We call it the Bomb. Coz’ it’s two of our favorite things mashed up into summer! Sounds delicious, right? The event features 20 of the best BBQ joints from across the US . . . local faves include, Green Street Smoked Meats, Smoque BBQ, and Art Smith’s Reunion. From Arizona, Hogapalooza, Daynes Craft BBQ from Texas, and Pappy’s Smokehouse, from St Louis. And a whole lot more. 
     
Don’t worry about a food coma, cause the line up will keep you buzzing. Headliners include Kane Brown, Old Dominion. Bailey Zimmerman and Megan Moroney - It all happens outdoors at the United Center. This one? get to it!

7) Chicago Gospel Festival  July 12

While some of us are across town smackin' down some BBQ, for those who love gospel music well, you've hit the jackpot too! The Chicago Gospel Festival returns to bring the joy of gospel music to the public - and it's free. Noon - 9pm. Don't miss this awe-inspiring event. Sit, relax, and enjoy the splendor of the Chicago skyline as your backdrop. Millennium Park.

8) Southport Art Fest  July 12/13

Spend a day at the Southport Art Fest and enjoy the sheer talent of local artisans. The fest includes live music, food from local restaurants, and all the art your eyes can take in. 

Tucked away on the north side,  just a few blocks from Wrigley Field, The Southport corridor is a charming neighborhood boasting plenty of restaurants. 9) Taste of River North   July 18/19

Just steps from ACME, we can almost taste it! Enjoy the eclectic cuisines from some of River North’s most delicious eateries like Joy District, Le Grand Boucheri, Moe’s Cantina, and more. There’s even a DOG PARADE! So book a room at ACME (Dog friendly), and make it an all-nighter with your dog. You can basically roll outta bed and be there from ACME! 

10)  Tacos Y Tamales Festival.   July 18/19/20

Celebrating rich hispanic and latin culture, Pilsen’s Taco Y Tamales Festival is brimming with Live music, endless Tacos, tamales, dance and more. 

Authenticity is the word that best describes the historic Pilsen neighborhood . . . with its rich hispanic culture and known for its award winning restaurants, home to the Chicago arts district, 16th street murals where you'll find some of the boldest, most beautiful artwork in the city, it’s no wonder that Forbes named it one of the coolest neighborhoods around the world. While you’re there explore, and immerse yourself in the colorful culture.

11) West Fest   July 18/19/20

One of Chicago’s more eclectic neighborhoods brings you West Fest! Located in West Town, the festival includes a kids fest and dog fest rolled into one. Of course there will be plenty to eat and drinks. Plus, what’s a festival without live music? The neighborhood (it's ain drag is Division St.), is known for their bumper crop of vintage shops - So if you’re a fan of hip yesteryear fashion, check out Lost Girls, Store B Vintage, and Richards Fabulous Finds. Really, it’s all pretty fabulous! 

12) Roscoe Village Burger Fest   July 18/19/20

The Burger’s are so good, they had to extend Burgerfest 3 days! Grab the el and get to Roscoe Village, one of the most charming neighborhoods in the city. Not only will you find some of the best burgers in the city - you’ll find two Live music stages and a ton of arts and crafts for sale by local artisans.  

While you’re there explore, and immerse yourself in the colorful culture. - check out the quaint shops Lazy Dog Antiques. If you’re into interior design, mosey through Kenneth Ludwig for great finds and inspiration! Or take a burger break and lose yourself in Roscoe Books - An independent neighborhood bookstore. Shop local!

13) Taste of Lincoln Avenue    July 25/26

You’ll find plenty to savor from the epicenter of Lincoln Park. Celebrating its 40th year, Taste of Lincoln Avenue is a big deal in Chicago. What do you get? An amazing line up of bands, local food favorites, arts, crafts and some of the best people
watching you’ll find! There’s even a Whiskey & Spirits tasting (tickets sold separately) and of course . . . a Dog parade! If you skip any fests this summer, don’t let it be this one! Sidenote: Many future spouses have met at this very festival - - - just sayin'!

14)  Lollapalooza     July 31 - Aug 3

Well, there's not much we can tell you about this juggernaut of the summer that you don't already know! Lollapalooza is one of the largest music events in the US. So, how about we just name drop some of the must see headliners! Tyler the Creator, Luke Combs, Gracie Abrams, Olivia Rodrigo, Korn, DJO, Rufus, Sabrina Carpenter . . . and about 100 others . . . If you haven't been - we impel you to experience Lala at least once, coz IYKYO. From ACME, turn right out of he hotel. Walk 2 1/2 blocks to Michigan Avenue - hang a right, cross the bridge - and you're there! Easy! No tickets? Phone a friend! 

15)  Northalsted Market Days    August 8/9/10

It lasts for 3 days, but you won’t forget it for years! Celebrating the community, Market Days is a 1/2 mile long music            festival with 5 stages. Eat, drink, dance to your hearts content. And the musical line-up is ridiculously on point featuring KeKe Palmer, David Archuleta, Saucy Santana, and lots more! Hit the link for dates and times of shows. ACME - Red Line to Wellington. 16) Bulls Fest   August 23/24

If you’re a Chicago Bulls fan, make a full court press to get to Bulls Fest! There will be lots of food and drink, a 3 v 3 tourney, and most importantly, a chance to meet a bunch of Chicago Bulls legends! And, entry is FREE! Don’t forget to check out the merch . . . lots of merch - some exclusive, will be available for purchase! Presented by Foot Locker, it’s at the United Center.

17)  Chicago Jazz Festival    Aug 28/29/30/31

FOUR free days of some of the best jazz music you’ll find north of the Mason Dixon. Headliners include Monty Alexander, a Jamaican American Jazz pianist who tours the world. The festival will also feature the jazz stylings of Kermit Ruffins, Esperanza Spalding, and Ari Brown. The Jazz festival has been part of Chicago’s culture for 40 years . . . and is a must see when visiting the city! It’s at Millennium Park . . . and ACME is an easy walk.

Jazz up your experience with a nearby meal - The Gage is located directly across from Michigan avenue for what they call refined, rustic cuisine. You might also try the popular Cindy’s Rooftop, known for having a delectable menu, rivaled only by the views from its all-season terrace. You'll need reservations for both!

If the festival gets you jonesing for even more Jazz, head up to Chicago's premier Jazz destination, The Green Mill - A little history, back in the day, this was known as a big hang out for the notorious, Al Capone and his crew. 

18)  West Loop Art Fest     Aug 31 - Sept 1
    
The vibrant West Loop neighborhood shows up for this 2 day festival featuring 100 artists, live music, a glass-blowing workshop (cool), and great eats by local restaurants. Beyond that, it’s a great reason to explore this revitalized urban-chic neighborhood just west of downtown. 

The West Loop, also known as restaurant row boasts some of the most exciting spots in the Chicago culinary scene. While you’re there, plan a meal at Rose Mary (imagine Italian with a Croatian kicker),  Au Chaval , a small hip diner with the best burger, like ever -  or Maxwell’s Trading, voted best new restaurant in 2024.

19) Printers Row Lit Fest    Sept 6/7

The Chicago Lit Fest has been enchanting Chicago for 40 years. It’s a free event that celebrates literature, authors, and culture. This year, the featured headline speaker is award-winning writer, novelist, essayist, Sandra Cisneros. Her novel, The House on Mango Street sold over 7 million copies. Expect lots of food, drinks, a full line-up of speakers. Consider it as a day spent enriching your soul! 

You’ll love the diverse and cultural vibe of the south loop with rich history where old warehouse buildings have been trransformed on the inside to authentic loft living today. Grab a Cuban coffee and sandwich at Cafecito, indulge in a pizza from local favorite, Roots Pizza, or spice up the day at Chicago Curry House. From ACME, hop on the Red Line at Grand, and head south. 

20) Lakeview East Festival of the Arts    September 13/14

Celebrating its 20th anniversary, the Lakeview East Festival of the Arts is one of Chicago’s most iconic neighborhood festivals. Boasting 120 juried artists in every medium imaginable from jewelry to sculpture, photography, and paintings, plus two music stages, and amazing local cuisine. 

The Lakeview East community is on the north side and is adjacent to the Lakefront trail along Lake Michigan, with a bike path and running /walking path with the most amazing views of the lake and downtown. Make arriving on the scene part of your adventure by renting a Divvy electric scooter or Bike and take in the gorgeous lakefront!

21)  Riot Fest 2025     September 19/20/21

Riot Fest turns it up in Douglass Park with a Kick-A line-up of Blink 182, Weezer, Green Day, Sex Pistols, Bad Religion, and lot’s more. Expect a hot, high octane experience of Live music, and everything else that comes with a major music festival experience!

1) Big Star
    1531 N Damen

Big Star gets Big points for its casual high spirited outdoor patio with views that include enticing Mexican plates, award winning margs, and some of the best people watching. It’s a local neighborhood place, but people rush from downtown to devour the west side haunt. 

The only caveat - go early because the lines can get ridiculous, and it’s well worth the wait! By the way, Fido is welcome - so feel free to bring him along. It’s a quick 15 minute Uber from ACME.

2) Gibson’s Italia
     233 N Canal

Most visitors who know Chicago, know Gibsons - but they may not be as familiar with its cousin, Gibson’s Italia, located smack dab on the Chicago river. THIS Gibson’s doesn’t feel anything like the original on Rush - It’s sleek, and sparkly, modern, and bustling with real Chicago peeps. Of course, you can still get the $165 Tomahawk, and a highly respectable seafood selection, but you can also take a u-turn and go for freshly made pastas. The food, while high-key pricey, is right on, and the menu feels much deeper than the original. 

Go for the meal, stay for the view - the view makes reconciling with the bill that much easier. It’s gorgeous, and unique! You’ll need a reservation for the best seats on the terrace.

And if you’re starting and ending your night at ACME, it’s definitely a scenic roundtrip stroll.

3) Piccolo Sogno

This? Hands down, Piccolo Sogno is one of the most romantically on-point outdoor dining patios in the city. The patio is wreathed by foliage, and lit with amber lights that give it a certain shimmer - One might imagine they’ve been transported to a villa in Tuscany rather than at the edge of the hustle and bustle of the Fulton Market neighborhood. That’s not to say it’s only for romance . . . We’ve dined with friend groups, hosted business dinners, and the vibe remains organically whimsical, where conversations can flow with ease and distractions from the street are non-existent. 

The Italian cuisine only goes to further the eclectic outdoor dining experience, and the martinis? Well, you’ll want to Uber home.

4) Aba

302 N Green Street

Offering dinner, Friday lunch, and weekend brunch, this Fulton Market hot spot is the place to be seen, eat great food, and check out the bomb city views. From the kebabs, to the lamb & beef kefta, to the multiple versions of Hummus, Aba has nailed the whole Mediterranean vibe. Their menu is modern, delicious, and surprisingly, super reasonable! Who couldn’t use a little chill Mediterranian vibe in their life? 

Given it’s location, there’s plenty to do before and after dinner as well! 

5) Castaways Beach Club
    1603 N Jean Baptiste Pointe du Sable Lake Shore Dr

Some may remember Castaways as the old boathouse ON North Avenue Beach where one could steal away for a cold brew if the weather turned - but today, Castaways is a whole new ballgame. Renovated (with some of its old time clunky charm remaining) it offers a food menu and cocktails that has transformed it into a must do destination for out-door dining. 

Castaway’s also offers cabana rentals with curtains and soft seating, you know, for some private time! Check it out for dinner, for the weekly summer fireworks at Navy Pier, or just to hang. They also have a slew of events throughout the summer. Beach Blanket Bingo, anybody?

There are few places in the city to get a decent meal, literally ON the lakefront, with the lake and skyline as your back drop Your insta stories will explode! 

6) Beatnik on the River

Perched on the edge of the Chicago River, this hip eclectic spot has a design described as a mashup between Morocco, Mediterranean and Italy offering opulent colors and accoutrements with stellar views of the downtown skyline and boats cruising by on the river. They feature an all-day menu featuring a culinary adventure into the Eastern Mediterranean, Northern Africa and Mexico - surely there’s a bit of something for everyone! 

You’ll need to make a reso at Beatniks on the River of course - River walk seats are very hard to come by! 

7) The Bellevue Chicago

     1031N Rush St 

The Gold Coast has always had this buzz about it, and always will. Sure, it’s been given less than flattering nicknames in the past, but it continues to reinvent itself to stay relevant to today’s young dining crowd. (Maple and Ash comes to mind - with a great outdoors btw). The Bellevue's  outdoor wraps around the corner of Bellevue and Rush - and it’s right across the street from Village Tavern, whose outdoor also does a cool wrap around. So if you’re not seeing the crowd you want, take a gaze across the street! Anyway, the food is solid, the cocktails are on-point, and the people watching is off the chart! 

Bonus: It’s a10 minute walk down State street from ACME. 

8) Las Fuentes

Located in Lincoln Park, Las Fuentes is the OG of outdoor patios. The vibe is loose, friendly, energetic, and the crowd is out to have a good time. While weeknights are low key, Live music every Friday and Saturday turns it up a notch, but maintains a level where it’s still still not too crazy to enjoy dinner and carry a conversation). The kicker is that Las Fuentes is definitely  a no crumbs left joint. Try the mole (yes please - and the enchiladas verdes are top notch! 

Bonus - It’s steps away from Kingston Mines - one of Chicago’s Best Blues clubs - so when your done with margarataville, stop in for a set. 

9) North Pond
    2610 N Cannon Dr.

For a meal that you’ll remember for a life time, find yourself at North Pond. The location is at the furtherest north section of Lincoln Park - no, not on a street, IN the park . . . surrounded by beautiful trees and right on the pond. It’s the bomb! And at $134 per person for an elevated five course tasting menu, it’s probably meant more for “special occasions, optional wine pairings will set you back an additional 74 bucks. If you want to go, and have a bit left over for a metro card, go for the prix fixe Sunday Brunch for over half the cost!

The kitchen is helmed by executive Chef César Murillo - you may know him if you’re a Top Chef fan - he appeared in season 22 in Milwaukee. Check him out on insta!  @chef.cesarmurillo

The Chicago Cubs swing into the 2026 season on March 26 with their home opener against the Washington Nationals and we’re here for it. Seriously! Whether you have game tickets or not, the opening day vibes ride high throughout the bars and pubs in Wrigleyville. There’s nothing starting the day with a cold one at Murphy’s Bleachers or Sluggers - definitively the OG’s of the neighborhood.   For those with a slightly more elevated vibe, try Rizzo’s Bar with a deeper menu - plus a patio with retractable roof. If you’re up for some activity, Lucky Strike gives you bowling, video games,, and ping pong . .. you know, for the sporty athletic types!

If you dig the sound of squeaky sneakers, fast paced action, and a bunch of really athletic tall dudes, get yourself to the 2026 NCAA March Madness Midwest Regionals at United Center. It’s the Sweet 16 and Elite Eight matchup to determine who advances to the final four in Indianapolis.

Bedridden following surgery, Matisse was no longer able to paint, and through exploration he discovered a new technique that allowed him to masterfully express his memories of Parisian music halls, mythology and more through the art of cut paper. During this time he created 20 cut-paper moquettes and introduced a new medium to the world.
